Hello Everyone,

It's time again for the WindanSea Boardfishing Tournament

We are a little late on our arrangements this year. We had a difficult time getting the permits this year because the city has changed their policy on events. I just got the permits this week........ and I had to lay out $800 this year compared to $50 last year!

Next year is going to be a make or break year for the Tournament because we will have to have a 1 million dollar insurance liability policy. The best quotes are around $3,000-$4,000. The cost of entry would at least triple to cover the cost, and would effectively kill participation.

As you all know, I have charged $20.00 for 16 years now.... this covers the materials, prizes, shirts, food and drinks. Most of the prizes have been donated and brought in by people who fish in the tournament. In the 16 years we have had the event, I have been out of pocket by several hundred dollars at the end of the day. The 2 years we came out ahead, we donated profits to a good cause.... last year we gave around $450 to Project Pacific www.projectpacific.org

So what we need is a company or club that already has insurance for events, that could become the host of the Tournament. They really wouldn't have to do anything.... I would still organize everything, but do it on their behalf... There would probably be no additional costs to this sponsor, and as you all know, the benefit would be some great publicity.

The city has actually banned all events at WindanSea Beach now, and we are lucky to have been "grandfathered" in and hopefully allowed to keep the event in the future.

Ok..... back to the Tournament!!

We only have Two Weeks until the big day, so forward this and post it everywhere you can to get out the word.

The Date.....

Sunday July 18th, 2004 17th Annual WindanSea Boardfishing Tournament.

Here is the agenda for the day:

The location is at the foot of Westbourne Street, La Jolla, California (just north of WindanSea Shack).

· Registration begins at 4:30 AM. Still only asking for a $20 donation, . Fishermen will be able to hit the water before 5:00 AM and must weigh in by 12:00 noon.

12:00 noon to 2:00 PM will be the BBQ.

Participants get the killer Tee Shirt,BBQ goodies, and opportunity to win the prizes. A limited supply of shirts will be available for non participants for $15

· All fish will be cleaned and cooked on the spot after they are weighed and recorded.

· 2:00 PM will be the ever-popular group photo shot.

· 2:30 PM will be the highlight of the Tourney, and a mini event in itself. The "Dash for Cash" with a "shotgun" start. The first contestant to get a legal live sport fish to the beach gets $500.00 dollars.

Know the rules, they are posted on the website at http://www.boardfishing.com/info/rules.html

Last year we had over $10,000 worth of contributions, and I expect to top it again this year. As you know, we don't really do much soliciting for sponsors, Most of them come from within.. friends of mine, and friends of the participants. If you want more stuff to win, then knock up your friends for contributions. If you have brought sponsors to the table before, please contact us and try and do it again. Jake Laws is in charge of rounding up the contributions.

We have also aligned ourselves with Project Pacific again this year, and will donate any profits to the cause. Visit them at http://www.projectpacific.org/ Your contributions are tax deductible.

We also need to get the Wrangler boats rounded up again, so if your friends were on the boats, get them the message and get them on the phone.

If you have a boat and are interested, or have done it before, please contact Shawn Kaus. He is in charge of rounding up the boats and coordinating the effort. Last year the Wrangler boats did a kick ass job of providing the fishermen with bait, refreshments and security. Thanks guys! Check out the website for there pics.

Shawn's # 858 945 4454

And we also need help with that killer BBQ. We fed over 500 people last year with a tiny budget! How did we pull that off..... People brought fish, people brought food, and we caught a lot of fish. So if you have had luck on the boats, bring fish, If you want to make a dish, just bring it.

This year, the BBQ will be catered by "Bay Park Fish Company" ..... they are in the process of opening up their great new store this summer, so keep your eye out for it. They will still need plenty of help cooking and serving though.

Todd Gwynn is in charge of rules and regulations, so contact him if you have any ideas for categories or changes

Please forward this to everyone you can think of, and post it on any forum or website you can. This letter, and how far it goes, is what will get the news out to the world about this unique event. A copy of the letter is posted on the website, so you can copy and paste it from here, or link to it at http://www.boardfishing.com/PRESS_RELEASES.html

Thanks again to all the volunteers and sponsors. please give them your thanks and patronage. Visit the website for up to date info, details, and killer pics from the previous years. Also check out the sweet article that Ed Zieralski (Tribune) wrote just for the website about the Tourney.

If everything goes as planned, we will have a film crew coming down to make a documentary on Boardfishing and the Tournament. This could go a long way to helping keep the tournament going. The Producer would like to do individual interviews of past winners and people with good "fish stories" I will post updates on the website.

I will also throw a "Coming Out Party" on Friday night the 16th so we can all get together, share some stories, possibly do some interviews, and have a few beers. I haven't decided if it will be at my house or we will have it at a bar, so if you want to go, send me an email, or call, and I will give you the details.

Seeya soon, Allen

2000 Tournament Wrap Up
Hey everyone,
>
> The 13th annual WindanSea Boardfishing Tournament was on Sunday, and it was
> the best event to date. The Day was perfect..... we had glass all morning,
> the water was 70 degrees, the sun came out, the fish showed up, and so did a
> record crowd.
>
> We broke the participant record, increasing from 76 to 101 this year. With
> family and friends, the event had 300+ on the beach, for a day of fishing
> and fun.
>
> Two thirds of the 101 participants were found lurking in total darkness in
> the am, and it was quite a site. The stoke of a great day was in the air,
> and the vibe was huge. Bill Decker and Scot Cherry led the hardcore
> fishermen of into the darkness, as they paddled out to make bait, and then
> soak it for the big ones.
>
> As the sun came up, the horizon was littered with Boardfishermen. some on
> the inside, some on the outside, some still paddling for the horizon. Soon
> the regular La Jolla boat fishing fleet was off La Lolla in the usual spot
> about two miles out. Many Board anglers stroked it into the chum lines and
> started hooking up.
>
> On the VHF, I heard the Sport Boats talking to each other, and trying to
> figure out why there were fifty guys on longboards in the middle of the
> ocean. And to make it even worse for them, the cattle boat anglers were
> watching the boardfishermen getting dragged in and out, up and down the
> line, by some real nice fish....fish that were not hitting the boat lines.
> The Yellowtail count for the Tourney came to nearly twenty.
>
> The Barracuda bite was wide open, with the average legal ones coming in at
> around 4.5 pounds each.
> These slimy, big toothed, torpedoes are a real handful for a boardfisherman.
> The Barri count on the beach was about forty, but it was just a small
> percentage of the ones that were caught. Hundreds of shorts, and "dont want
> to deal with it" fish were caught and released.
>
> The Calico Bass bite was also great, with Bill Deckers nearly six pounder
> leading the 23 calico that were weighed in.
>
> The Grand prize for the Tourney went to Mike Smith, who caught a nice 12
> poud Yellowtail, and then backed it up with two 11 pounders.
>
> The most fish by weight went to Andy Sturtevant, With his nine Barracuda
> weighing in at nearly 37 pounds.
>
> Jeff Rose won for the biggest stringer, with his five Barracuda and one
> Yellowtail, because Andy won the most fish by weight, and an angler can only
> win one category.
>
> The grommet award went to 12 year old Drew Woodworth, with his nice Sand
> Bass.
>
> At noon, we had the weigh in, and gave out several thousands in prizes.
>
> The BBQ was great. We cooked up fify pounds of pollo asada, along with about
> a hundred pounds of fish (We were cooking them as fast as we could weigh
> them)
>
> The Highlight of the event had to be the "Dash for Cash" where, after a mad
> "shotgun start" beach rush, the first angler to catch a fish and get back to
> the beach, gets $500 cash. Paul Gallegos, ended up on the beach in twenty
> minutes, with his 13 inch calico, to take the prize.

2000 Tournament Press Release
Hey everyone,

Its time again for that crazy WindanSea Boardfishing Tournament. The
date is set for Sunday July 16th. 2000. At 5:00 am. As usual, I need
help getting the word out, so copy this letter and get it out everywhere

you can. Anyone that can get us some new sponsors, or follow upon your
old contacts, would also be a great help!

In case you are getting this mail and do not know what it is about, it
is an ocean fishing tournament in La Jolla California, where all
participants
must fish from a Surfboard! These guys paddle miles on their boards, and

catch very real fish ( Yellowtail, White Sea Bass, Calico, Barracuda,
Halibut,
and even Shark!) There will be several thousand dollars of cash and
prizes to
give away, and as always, everyone gets a killer commemorative tee shirt

featuring work by Paul Elder. It is one of the most unique events
in all of fishing, and receives much media coverage because it is so
special. We expect about 75-100 contestants, along with their family and

friends.

I would like to take the time to thank everyone who has been with us
through the years. I never imagined when this thing started, that it
would
still be going stronger and stronger after 13 years now.

There are some special people I would like to thank who have been
instrumental in keeping this thing going. First, my roommate and Bro,
Thompson, who always pulls through, helps pack everything up, and plays

M.C. on the big day. To Ed Zieralski, at the Tribune, who does much more

than just give us a mention, he takes this event personally. I can't
even remember him missing a Tournament in person. It is great that with
all of the things he has an opportunity to cover, he claims this to be
one of his favorite events. To Paul Elder, who keeps coming up with the
killer art for the shirts, and to my Mom, who keeps you guys on the data

base, and gets these letters out every year. Thanks to all those that
have been helping with the BBQ in the recent years; Baja Bob, and

Mrs Norling. And to all the sponsors, who are all home grown, and give
generously, year after years.. Thanks.

And last but not least, to all you guys that show up and make this such
a great event. It is really cool to see some of the guys from the early
years showing up with their kids, and bringing a new generation into our

"family" of Boardfishing. We really have something special here, and I
feel honored to represent you guys each and every year. You guys (and
gals) have made this what it is today.

I have a special surprise for everyone this year, I have put up a web
page, with lots of cool photos, and news clippings from the past
years. Here is where it is:

http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=218475

click on the boardfishing album

I need help putting names and captions on the photos, so if you have
input, you can add comments to the guest book on each individual photo.

I also would love to add any photos you have to the site. You can email
them to me, or sent them and I can scan them.
Check it often for new stuff. In the next few months, I will make a
real site, with the history of the sport. With more photos, and
featuring credit and links to our sponsors.

Anyone that is on line, drop me an email, RSVP, and I will put you on my

list.

To all you guys that have been lucky enough to stock up on some fish.
bring some to the BBQ.

Here is the agenda for the day

Fishermen will be able to hit the water at 5:00 am, and must weigh in by

12:00

12:00-2:00 will be the BBQ featuring Baja Bob as grill Master, and Ricky

All fish will be cleaned and cooked on the spot after they are weighed
